For Over 30 Years, a Committed and Innovative Approach to Viticulture

For more than 30 years, Domaine Jean-René Germanier has embraced a vision of viticulture where respect for nature, innovation, and the pursuit of quality go hand in hand. As one of the pioneers of integrated production in French-speaking Switzerland, the Domaine has progressively strengthened its practices to develop an increasingly sustainable and demanding approach to viticulture.

Today, more than 25 hectares are certified by Bio Suisse, and seven flagship wines proudly carry this label. Beyond these figures, the entire vineyard benefits from a philosophy that places strong emphasis on soil health, biodiversity, and the preservation of Valais terroirs.

This commitment is rooted in a deep conviction: great wines are born from vines that thrive in harmony with their environment.

 

A Natural Transition Toward Sustainable Viticulture

Long before organic farming became an obvious choice, Domaine Jean-René Germanier was already considered a pioneer in Valais. As early as the 1990s, the Domaine adopted the principles of integrated production and implemented practices designed to preserve its vineyards in a sustainable way.

Cover cropping between vineyard rows, reducing inputs, eliminating unnecessary insecticides, and promoting biodiversity were among the pioneering measures introduced. These forward-thinking choices have helped create a vineyard that is both more resilient and more vibrant.

 

The Domaine’s First Organic Viticulture Trials

In the early 2010s, the Domaine took a new step forward by launching its first organic viticulture trials.

Remaining true to its spirit of innovation, the team chose a gradual approach, carefully evaluating the practices best suited to the realities of the Valais vineyards. Several pilot plots were therefore managed organically in order to assess their agronomic and qualitative benefits.

This initiative led, in 2013, to the creation of the Domaine’s first organically certified wines, notably the Amigne de Vétroz Grand Cru and the VUEGE Gamaret de Vollèges. This important milestone marked the beginning of a long-term commitment that would continue to grow and evolve over the years.

Organic Wines from Valais and the Expression of Terroir

With more than 25 hectares certified by Bio Suisse, Domaine Jean-René Germanier is now one of the leading organic wine estates in French-speaking Switzerland.

This certification is based on rigorous practices:

• No synthetic plant protection products
• Carefully managed cover crops between vineyard rows
• Attentive soil management
• Active preservation of biodiversity

Organic viticulture requires more manual work, closer monitoring of the vines, and a strong capacity to adapt to changing conditions. It is a daily commitment that prioritizes quality over quantity.

Throughout the vineyard, the same philosophy guides every decision: preserving soil vitality, encouraging natural balance, and passing on a sustainable winegrowing heritage.

In the cellar, interventions are kept to a minimum, allowing the fruit, the vintage, and the unique identity of each terroir to express themselves fully.

Why Are Not All Vineyard Plots Certified Organic?

The Domaine’s commitment to responsible viticulture extends far beyond the plots that are certified by Bio Suisse.

The vineyards of Valais have unique characteristics: steep slopes, historic terraces, dry-stone walls, and fragmented plots. These specific conditions sometimes require tailored approaches to ensure both the quality of vineyard work and the long-term sustainability of the estate.

Whenever conditions allow, the Domaine prioritizes organic certification. In other areas, certain plots are managed according to the standards of IP-SUISSE, a recognized program that places biodiversity, reduced inputs, and the preservation of natural habitats at the heart of its approach.

Beyond certifications and labels, the objective remains the same: to protect natural resources, encourage biodiversity, and cultivate grapes of the highest quality.

Wines True to Their Terroir

At Domaine Jean-René Germanier, organic viticulture is not an end in itself. It is a way of expressing, with greater precision, the unique character of Valais terroirs and grape varieties.

Living soils, carefully controlled yields, and close attention to every vineyard plot make it possible to produce high-quality grapes and wines that fully reflect their origin.

The Domaine’s Bio Suisse wines are among the most representative organic wines of Valais. They stand out for their freshness, balance, and authenticity. They demonstrate how demanding viticulture can produce wines that are precise, elegant, and deeply rooted in their terroir.

The Bio Suisse certification is based on a strict set of standards governing vineyard cultivation, biodiversity preservation, and the reduction of agricultural inputs.
